NASA has modernized its Chemical Equilibrium with Applications (CEA) code from the legacy CEA2 to CEA v3. This update transitions the software to an object-oriented architecture with expanded data and interface support.
Why it matters
Engineers can now perform large-scale propulsion trade studies much faster using modern programming languages. It also enables analysis of next-generation fuels, including green propellants and sustainable aviation fuels.

- CEA v3 supports interfaces for Python, C, MATLAB, and Excel.
- The thermodynamic database now includes n-Butanol and green propellant constituents.
- Multi-case workflows can be approximately 800 times faster than in CEA2.
